Microvesicles in bronchoalveolar lavage as a potential biomarker of COPD

چکیده

Microvesicles (MVs) released from almost all cells are recognized as cell communication tools. MVs have been investigated in several inflammatory diseases but poorly biological fluids like bronchoalveolar lavage (BAL) of smokers. The purpose this study was to investigate the presence and source BAL smokers with without chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) compared nonsmoking controls. Using flow cytometry BAL, we detected endothelial alveolar macrophage (AM)-derived found a higher number AM-MVs COPD than nonsmokers, which correlated pack-years ( r = 0.46; P 0.05) degree airway obstruction measured by forced expiratory volume 1 s percent predicted ?0.56; 0.01). Endothelial macrophage-derived present measurable human fluid. In response smoking development COPD, signals AM-derived can be quantified, their numbers related decrease lung function. These results open opportunity for future investigation these microvesicles biomarkers possible mechanistic guides COPD.

Bronchoalveolar lavage chitotriosidase activity as a biomarker of sarcoidosis.

BACKGROUND Chitotriosidase (CTO) was shown to be a good biomarker of sarcoidosis. Increased levels in bronchoalveolar lavage fluid (BALF) were reported and associated with more severe forms of the disease. OBJECTIVES The aim of the study was to evaluate the value of CTO in BALF as a routine biomarker of sarcoidosis. METHODS The study included 85 patients in 9 control subjects in whom serum ...

Bronchoalveolar lavage as a research tool.

Researchers over the past 40 years have utilized bronchoalveolar lavage (BAL) as a tool to help expand our knowledge of pulmonary medicine. Many reports have documented BAL as a safe procedure for research subjects. New technologies, such as flow cytometry, have provided much needed insight into the mechanisms behind several pulmonary diseases. The concept of the lung as an easily accessible mu...

Bronchoalveolar lavage as a diagnostic tool.

Bronchoalveolar lavage (BAL) provides an important diagnostic tool that can facilitate the diagnosis of various diffuse lung diseases. BAL fluid can be analyzed to determine white blood cell (WBC) profiles and to detect respiratory pathogens. Although BAL is seldom useful as a "stand-alone" diagnostic test for the diagnosis of diffuse infiltrative lung disease, when combined with clinical data ...

The matrikine PGP as a potential biomarker in COPD.

The lack of a well-characterized biomarker for the diagnosis of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) has increased interest toward finding one, because this would provide potential insight into disease pathogenesis and progression. Since persistent neutrophilia is an important hallmark in COPD Pro-Gly-Pro (PGP), an extracellular matrix-derived neutrophil chemoattractant, has been sugges...

Bronchoalveolar lavage fluid galactomannan as a diagnostic biomarker for IPA: still a long way to go

In a recent issue of Critical Care, Maria Schroeder et al. [1] reported a prospective observational study involving 85 patients who had positive Aspergillus cultures or had only a positive galactomannan test. They hypothesized that a diagnostic algorithm including the detection of galactomannan in bronchoalveolar lavage fluid (BALF) would increase the diagnostic sensitivity for invasive pulmona...
